PCVR tracking without Lighthouse tracking

The HTC VIVE Ultimate Tracker is HTC's answer to standalone tracking without base stations - something I was personally looking forward to. In our testing environment, we paired the trackers with a VIVE XR Elite and also tested compatibility with SteamVR via the dongle. The result? Promising, with room for improvement.
The major advantage of this tracker is that it uses inside-out tracking via two onboard cameras. You no longer need external sensors, making the setup much simpler. The tracker is surprisingly compact, lightweight, and charges quickly via USB-C. You can directly pair it with the VIVE XR Elite or the Focus 3 - and soon also with a PC using the special dongle.
In practice, the tracking worked quite accurately, although I noticed that it is slightly less stable than traditional Lighthouse solutions during fast, irregular movements (such as during dance movements or martial arts). But for applications like fitness, motion capture or full-body avatars in VRChat, it works just fine. Especially for mobile setups or training sessions where simplicity is paramount, this is a breath of fresh air.
Another strong point is the versatility of the attachment: thanks to the standard 1/4" screw thread, you can easily mount the tracker on belts, holders, or accessories. We used it with the EOZ straps, which proved to be a solid combination.
Bear in mind: compatibility with third-party software and platforms is still in its infancy. Full integration with SteamVR will only be possible once the dongle is officially available. Therefore, we advise business customers to thoroughly check beforehand whether the intended use is currently feasible.
All in all, the VIVE Ultimate Tracker is a significant step towards wireless flexibility. Not perfect, but definitely one of the most accessible options for inside-out tracking at the moment.
