Originally developed for the Vive Focus 3 and Vive XR Elite, the Vive Ultimate Tracker is now also compatible with third-party PC VR headsets that support SteamVR, such as the Valve Index, and standalone devices like the Quest 3 and Pico 4 Ultra. De HTC VIVE Ultimate Tracker is HTC’s antwoord op standalone tracking zonder base stations – en dat is iets waar ik persoonlijk erg naar uitkeek. In onze testomgeving hebben we de trackers gekoppeld aan een VIVE XR Elite en ook getest op compatibiliteit met SteamVR via de dongle. Het resultaat? Veelbelovend, met ruimte voor verbetering.
Het grote pluspunt van deze tracker is dat hij gebruikmaakt van inside-out tracking via twee onboard camera’s. Je hebt dus geen externe sensoren meer nodig, wat de setup veel eenvoudiger maakt. De tracker is verrassend compact, licht in gewicht, en laadt snel op via USB-C. Je kunt hem direct koppelen aan de VIVE XR Elite of de Focus 3 – en met de speciale dongle binnenkort ook aan een PC.
In de praktijk werkte de tracking best nauwkeurig, al merkte ik dat het bij snelle, onregelmatige bewegingen (bijvoorbeeld tijdens dansbewegingen of martial arts) soms net iets minder stabiel is dan traditionele Lighthouse-oplossingen. Maar voor toepassingen als fitness, motion capture of full-body avatars in VRChat werkt het prima. Zeker voor mobiele setups of trainingen waarbij eenvoud voorop staat, is dit een verademing.
Een ander sterk punt is de veelzijdigheid van de bevestiging: dankzij de standaard 1/4" schroefdraad kun je de tracker makkelijk monteren op riemen, houders of accessoires. Wij gebruikten hem met de EOZ straps, wat een solide combinatie bleek.
Let wel: de compatibiliteit met third-party software en platforms staat nog in de kinderschoenen. Volledige integratie met SteamVR is pas mogelijk zodra de dongle officieel beschikbaar is. Voor zakelijke klanten adviseren we daarom om vooraf goed te checken of het gebruiksdoel nu al haalbaar is.
Al met al is de VIVE Ultimate Tracker een mooie stap richting draadloze flexibiliteit. Niet perfect, maar absoluut een van de meest toegankelijke opties voor inside-out tracking op dit moment.
